The scarlet lantern  /

samenvatting: "We have gone many places in Tokyo together, Hanna, her brother, Rasha, and I -- and I am puzzled, sometimes, as to which one I'm addressing -- sister or brother! Their complexions are identical, unblemished and satin-smooth; they're practically the same height and weight. Often, they exchange costumes for their performances at the Kabukiza Theatre, where both play male as well as female roles. Though of opposite sexes, they seem to intermix, at times, in my mind, creating a mysterious vacillation in sex. It is this mixture in them -- one sex being dominant this minute, the other sex the next -- which makes the pull of both of them on my sense irresistible... To love one is to love both!"--From back cover.

samenvatting: On a hot summer’s day in June 1969 everyone in the village gathered to welcome Queen Juliana. It would have been an unforgettable day of celebration if only the baker hadn’t been running late with his deliveries and knocked down little Hanne with his brand-new VW van. Years later, Jan arrives on a hot day in June in order to tidy his sister’s grave, and is overcome again with grief and silent fury. Isn’t it finally time to get to the bottom of things? June traces in spellbinding, tender detail how the ripples from one tragic incident spread through a community, a family and down the generations.

Windsor and Perry : Reactions of Siblings in Same-Sex and Heterosexual Couples  / Jennifer B. Clark ... [et al.].

Journal of Homosexuality, 62 (2015) 8 (august), p. 993-1008
bron: Journal of Homosexuality jaargang: 62 (2015) 8 (august), p. 993-1008
samenvatting: The U.S. Supreme Court decisions in U.S. v. Windsor (570 U.S. 307) and Hollingsworth v. Perry (570 U.S. 399) created a focal point for public discussion of marriage equality for same-sex couples. This article reports the results of an exploratory study of the reactions of individuals currently or previously in same-sex couple relationships and a heterosexual sibling who is currently or previously married (N = 371) to the Supreme Court decisions. Thematic content analysis was used to explore participants? responses to an open-ended question on a survey. Reactions of individuals from same-sex couples revealed the following themes: (1) longitudinal perspectives on the advancement of rights for same-sex couples; (2) emotional responses celebrating the decisions or expressing relief; (3) affirmation of their relationship or rights; (4) practical consequences of the extension of rights; and (5) minority stress related to anticipation of future prejudice or discrimination. Themes in the heterosexual siblings? responses were (1) ally support; (2) flat support without emotion or elaboration; (3) indifference to or ignorance about the decisions; and (4) disapproval of the decisions. These themes are compared and discussed in light of prior research on reactions to marriage restriction debates and marriage (in)equality and family relationships. Predictors of Heterosexual Siblings' Acceptance of Their Lesbian Sister or Gay Brother  / Angela N. Hilton & Dawn M. Szymanski.

Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling, 8 (2014) 2 (apr-jun), p. 164-188
bron: Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling jaargang: 8 (2014) 2 (apr-jun), p. 164-188
samenvatting: Research has shown that lesbian and gay (LG) individuals are coming out not only to their parents, but also to their siblings. Eighty percent of individuals in the United States are raised with one or more siblings; however, researchers have frequently underestimated the importance of the sibling bond. This study examined potential correlates of heterosexual siblings' acceptance of their LG sister or brother using an online survey format (N = 189). In addition, psychometric properties for the Acceptance of Sibling Sexual Orientation Scale are provided. Results revealed that greater sibling relationship quality in adulthood, more contact with LG individuals, greater knowledge of LG communities, more support for LG civil rights, and various demographics (being female, having higher educational levels, not having an orthodox/fundamentalist religious orientation, less church attendance, and more liberal political ideology) are related to heterosexual siblings? acceptance of their LG sister or brother. However, when these variables were examined together in a regression model, only sibling relationship in adulthood, contact with LG individuals, support for LG civil rights, and religious attendance were significant unique predictors of acceptance.

A Comparison of Trans Women, Trans Men, Genderqueer Individuals, and Cisgender Brothers and Sisters on the Bem Sex-Role Inventory : Ratings by Self and Siblings  / Rhonda J. Factor, Esther D. Rothblum.

Journal of Homosexuality, 64 (2017) 13, p. 1872-1889
bron: Journal of Homosexuality jaargang: 64 (2017) 13 , p. 1872-1889
samenvatting: A U.S. national sample of 295 transgender adults (trans women, trans men, and genderqueer individuals) and their cisgender siblings completed the Bem Sex-Role Inventory about their siblings as well as themselves, which enabled a comparison between self-perceptions and sibling's perceptions of personality characteristics. Self-reported personality characteristics scored as feminine of trans women were not statistically different from those of their cisgender sisters, but they were significantly higher than self-reported femininity scores of trans men, genderqueer individuals, and cisgender brothers. Self-reported personality characteristics scored as masculine of trans men did not differ significantly from those of their cisgender brothers, but they were higher than those of trans women. Trans men and cisgender brothers were viewed by their siblings in a more sex-typed way than they rated themselves, whereas trans women and cisgender sisters were rated by their siblings in a less sex-typed way than they viewed themselves.

Using circular questions to explore individual family member experiences of youth gender dysphoria in Australia  / Jason J. Westwater, Elizabeth Riley & Gregory M. Peterson.

International Journal of Transgender Health, 21 (2020) 3 (apr-sep), p. 321-336
bron: International Journal of Transgender Health jaargang: 21 (2020) 3 (apr-sep), p. 321-336
samenvatting: The number of young people reporting gender dysphoria is increasing worldwide, with gender dysphoria known to affect everyone in the family in unique ways. Previous research has highlighted the importance of family support and understanding; however, much less is known about individual and collective family member experiences, particularly for siblings under the age of 18 years. Aims: This study sought to identify, describe and interpret individual family member experiences of youth gender dysphoria using semi-structured interviews, incorporating circular questioning, within a whole of family, clinical and wider social context. Methods: Thirty-five individual family members living in Australia (nine young people aged 12-17 years experiencing gender dysphoria, 10 mothers, eight fathers, and eight siblings aged 11-17 years) were interviewed, exploring positive and negative experiences of youth gender dysphoria, within and outside of the family. Family relationships, support and healthcare experiences were also explored. Results: All participants reported a mixture of positive and negative experiences of youth gender dysphoria. Levels of acceptance tended to change with the duration of transition, with most family members adapting with time. Siblings reported mixed experiences within the same family, with some struggling to adapt. Most family members felt that including the whole family in the healthcare of the young person was important, although dependent on individual circumstances and family context. Specialist gender care experiences were unanimously positive, although services were considered difficult to access. Discussion: Family members reported shared and individual positive and negative experiences of youth gender dysphoria across social contexts. Accepting and facilitating gender transition for young people appeared to improve individual and family functioning. Most participants valued a whole of family approach within specialist healthcare. The use of circular questioning in the study helped dispel assumptions and facilitated curiosity for others? experiences in the family.

Homophobia in Nigerian schools and universities: Victimization, Mental Health Issues, Resilience of the LGBT Students and support from Straight Allies. A Literature review  / Kehinde Okanlawon.

Journal of LGBT Youth, 18 (2021) 4 (oct-dec), p. 327-359
bron: Journal of LGBT Youth jaargang: 18 (2021) 4 (oct-dec), p. 327-359
samenvatting: This paper reviews the literature on the schooling experiences and challenges LGBT students face in Nigerian schools and universities, and how heterosexual students, teachers and school administrators view and respond to LGBT issues. Twenty-eight publications which include themes on LGBT experiences in Nigerian schools and universities were reviewed. Findings show that LGBT students experience rejection, bullying, and victimization from parents and siblings at home, and from students, teachers, and school administrators who sometimes expel LGBT students from schools and universities. The study shows internalized homophobia, stress and depression facing LGBT students, their resilience, and the support they receive from a few straight allies among students and lecturers. Findings reveal how Nigerian schools and universities promote compulsory heterosexuality through anti-gay views, disciplinary actions, and rules to discourage homosexuality. Finally, this paper discusses the implication of homophobia in Nigerian schools and universities and how to challenge homophobia regarding Nigeria?s inclusive education goal.
